MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Dear Friends,

Columbus Day Regatta is around the corner again. This will be our forty seventh year and I have been on the Committee for at least 12 of them. I remember the first time I noticed the people on the Start Boat. They were dressed in blue blazers and white pants or skirts and they had a cannon to signal the starts. I made up my mind that I wanted to be part of the pomp and ceremony. Little did I know that if I wanted those privileges that a lot of hard work was involved. It takes 10 months of meeting and planning to get this Regatta underway but it’s lots of fun.

Unfortunately this year we have lost another good friend and founder of the regatta. Timothy J. Sullivan passed away in July. He was Chairman from 1954-1968. President Trujillo of the Dominican Republic deeded the Trujillo Cup to him for this regatta and Mr. Sullivan deeded the Timothy J. Sullivan Founder’s Trophy. He was a true sailor and pioneer of this event.

The Racing Rules of Sailing 2001-2004 are in effect and we will be sailing under them unless amended. Please review your Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions in the brochure.

We created a web site and hope it serves to provide useful information as well as a forum to communicate. The entry form can be downloaded and there are photos of past regattas and awards. Hopefully you will glean the humor of our webmaster also.

This year we worked closely with the Park Service regarding boating safety and environmental issues. We hope everyone practices safe boating and uses common sense. Designate a non-drinker to operate your vessel if you are going to drink. Have enough life jackets for all people on your vessel and use running lights. It goes without saying to slow down especially when you have swimmers in the water. Plastic bags and Styrofoam do not mix with sea life. Be a good boater and keep your trash on your boat.

We are fortunate to have Merrill Stevens as our primary sponsor. We thank them for their support. We also thank Coral Reef Yacht Club and Lightning Printing .

Have a great and safe weekend. See you there.
