2017 Columbus Day Regatta – Update

Columbus Day Competitors:

Hurricane Irma caused significant damage to the Coconut Grove waterfront. Many of the yacht clubs and marinas suffered serious structural damage and many boats sank from the storm surge and high winds. As a result of the hurricane damage, and the lack of dock space available on October 7th and 8th, 2017. The Columbus Day Committee is not able to provide the usual Columbus Day Regatta. The official Columbus Day Regatta has been cancelled and CDR will refund any paid entry fees less a small administrative fee charged by the hosting website.

Many sailors have urged us to run some type of race to keep the spirit of Columbus Day alive and to give racers an event to look forward to. As a result, we plan to run a race on Saturday October 7th, 2017. The race will likely be a short distance race with only a few fleets, all starting at once. Unfortunately, there is no dock space available for visiting boats, so we understand that out of town boats may not wish to participate. We plan on having an awards party on Saturday October 14th, 2017 at Shake a Leg Miami. The perpetual trophies will not be given out this year. We will award 1st through 3rd in each class. For more information on the “Columbus Day One Day Race” please see the amended Notice of Race. The entry fee for the “Columbus Day One Day Race” will be $25.00 and will include commemorative medallions, trophies, and an open bar at SALM on October 14th. Additional donations are welcome. We regret that this year’s event cannot proceed as scheduled, but hope that you will join us on October 7th to help keep the spirit of the Columbus Day Regatta alive and well.

  • “Columbus Day One Day Race” is Saturday, October 7th.
  • Awards Party is Saturday, October 14th.
